USA Top 40, 5.23.21: ‘Peaches’ leads the top while J. Cole lands eight songs on the chart

Justin Bieber finally gained some separation from his challengers as “Peaches” held on to the No. 1 spot for the second straight week and for the third week overall. “Leave the Door Open” by Silk Sonic and “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd remained at No. 2 and 3 respectively, while Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More” and Masked Wolf’s “Astronaut In the Ocean” traded places at No. 4 and 5.

The biggest news of the week was the effect of J. Cole’s Off-Season album, as it placed seven songs on the chart in addition to “interlude,” which debuted a week ago. While the songs haven’t received significant airplay, they have dominated the streaming market more than any album has done this year. The new seven also represented the biggest influx of new material this year. The seven new songs are “my.life,” “amari,” “pride.is.the.devil,” “95.south,” “applying.pressure,” “100.mil” and “let.go.my.hand.” The only other debut this week was Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u,” which jumped in at No. 28. SpottemGottem’s “Beat Box” also made a reappearance at No. 37.

Four songs made significant moves of four or more spots, and J. Cole also topped that list, as “interlude” soared 15 spots from No. 28 to No. 13. Trippie Redd and Playboi Carti’s “Miss the Rage” jumped five spots from No. 30 to No. 18. Dua Lipa’s “We’re Good” (No. 21) and Arianna Grande’s “pov” (No. 29) both moved up five spots.

Another major development was not regarding songs on the chart, but songs that finally left it. Four songs exited the Top 40 after 19 weeks – “Mood” (24kGoldn and Iann Dior), “Therefore I Am” (Billie Eilish), “What You Know ‘Bout Love” (Pop Smoke) and “You Broke Me First” (Tate McRae).

Here is the updated chart for the week of May 23, 2021. Each song is linked to its official video on YouTube, where possible. To listen to the full playlist of these songs, visit our page on Spotify.
