USA Top 40, 4.4.21: Three songs challenge Rodrigo, but ‘Drivers License’ still No. 1

This week’s top 40 is the story of four dominant songs at the top, plus a lightning debut by a fifth. Even though it’s beginning to dip and may be replaced at No. in the next week or two, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” remains the No. 1 song in the country for an eighth straight week and is now the year’s top single (at least for the time being). Meanwhile, “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd narrowly holds on to No. 2, while Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” is a serious challenger at No. 3. Just a shade behind is Cardi B’s “Up,” which we think will be the song that will be the next one to ascend to the top.

That is, unless Justin Bieber gets there first. His “Peaches” blew through the chart and debuted squarely at No. 5. It was one of three new songs on this week’s chart, while two others made re-entries. Rod Wave’s “Street Runner” made a respectable debut at No. 28, and Maroon 5 and Meghan Thee Stallion also made their first appearance at No. 35 with “Beautiful Mistakes.” Re-entering this week are “Without You” by The Kid Laroi, who reappeared at No. 31 after two weeks away; and “Dynamite” by BTS, which showed at No. 38 after eight weeks off the chart.

Only a handful of songs made significant moves, but most of those moves were so large that it moved most of the chart downward. This week, 20 songs lost ground, while four others didn’t move at all. Of those that did jump, six moved one to three spots. The five that did leap more than three spots were “What You Know Bout Love” by Pop Smoke (up four from No. 11 to No. 7), “Anyone” by Justin Bieber (up 10 from No. 26 to No. 16), “Astronaut in the Ocean” by Masked Wolf (up 15 from No. 37 to No. 22), “Hold On” by Justin Bieber (up 10 from No. 33 to No. 23) and “Whoopty” by CJ (up six from No. 40 to No. 24)
