Every so often, a writing prompt tells you more about the prompt-maker than it does about the writer.
Back in November, WordPress asked, “What are your favorite animals?”
Today’s question is, “What is your favorite animal?”
Which raises an obvious question: is this progress, or just a singular version of the same thought?
The difference is cosmetic. One invites range; the other demands a final answer. But both assume preference is tidy and decisive, as if human attachment works like a dropdown menu and not like something shaped by time, memory, and experience.
Still, since the question insists on an answer, I’ll play along.
If I’m forced to choose just one, I’d say a dog—not because it’s original, but because it’s true. More specifically, it’s my two dogs, Princess and Samantha, who together explain why the singular version of the question doesn’t quite work.
Princess came first. Confident, affectionate, and fully convinced she belongs wherever she happens to be. There’s nothing tentative about her. She commits—to people, to space, to the moment she’s in—and expects the world to meet her there.
Samantha came later, a stray, and she moves through life differently. Thoughtful. Watchful. Careful with trust. She learned early that safety isn’t assumed, and when she finally settles beside you, it feels earned rather than automatic.
They’re both dogs, but they’re not interchangeable. They’re not a category. They’re two distinct stories living under the same roof, teaching different lessons about loyalty, fear, patience, and grace.
And that’s the problem with recycled questions that pretend to be new. They flatten what should be layered. They reduce lived experience to a single word and call it insight.
So yes, my favorite animal might be a dog.
But the honest answer—the one that doesn’t fit neatly into a Thursday prompt—is Princess and Samantha, together, and the reminder that the best answers usually require more imagination than the question that asked for them.
