It took only eight weeks for The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber to land at No. 1 with “Stay,” but in Week 8, it achieved an almost perfect score in our algorithm to remain at the top. The song’s dominance was slightly overshadowed by the release of Kanye West’s latest album, “Dona,” which essentially dropped a bomb on the Top 40 countdown. Every song on the album had significant streaming and download success, which led to seven tracks from the album entering the Top 40 this week. With so many songs from “Donda” appearing on streaming indicators, that meant that the other songs that had been having success there were jumbled almost randomly. We expect Drake’s newest release, “Certified Lover Boy,” which dropped on Friday, to have a similar effect next week.
For now, the Top 5 remained virtually unchanged, with “Stay” at No. 1 and Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u” sticking at No. 2. “Industry Baby” by Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow jumped two spots to No. 3, while Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More” and Ed Sheeran’s “Bad Habits” both dropped one place to No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.
Kanye’s assault on the chart was part of an influx of 10 new songs on the countdown that dumped a number of former Top 10 and Top 20 songs out of the countdown. Chief among these was Bieber’s “Peaches,” which formerly held the No. 1 spot for three weeks. Two other former Top 10 songs also exited this week — “Astronaut in the Ocean” by Masked Wolf and “RAPSTAR” by Polo G.
“Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd slipped only one spot, but that carried it out of the Top 10 for the first time in 2021.
