Bugs Bunny.
Nothing else is particularly close.
I grew up with a lot of cartoon characters I liked, and there are some I still have a soft spot for. Charlie Brown is probably the one I identify with most. He keeps trying, keeps hoping, keeps believing maybe this time things will go his way, and somehow Lucy still pulls the football away. I understand Charlie Brown a little too well.
I love Snoopy too. He’s imaginative, funny and capable of turning an ordinary doghouse into a fighter plane, a writing desk or whatever else his mind decides it should be that day.
But Bugs Bunny is in a different category.
He’s smart, sarcastic, completely self-assured and almost impossible to rattle. Somebody is always coming after him, and somehow Bugs manages to turn the entire situation around. Elmer Fudd wants to shoot him. Yosemite Sam wants to blast him. Daffy Duck wants to outsmart him. Bugs usually responds by making them look ridiculous.
And he does it with style.
That’s probably what I like most. Bugs doesn’t just win. He seems to enjoy the process. He talks directly to the audience, casually munches on a carrot while everything falls apart around him, and delivers one-liners with perfect timing.
There are probably deeper reasons I’ve always liked him. Charlie Brown feels familiar to me. Bugs Bunny feels like the guy you wish you could be when life starts coming after you. Unbothered. Quick on your feet. Three moves ahead.
And preferably holding a carrot.
So, yeah. Favorite cartoon character? Bugs Bunny.
By a mile.
