I’ve spent a good portion of my life trying not to care what people think of me—and failing more often than I succeed. It’s not vanity. It’s not ego. It’s something deeper, something formed long before adulthood: the nagging sense that I’m somehow a step behind everyone else.
For years I felt inferior without really knowing why. I wasn’t the smartest kid in the room. I wasn’t the best athlete. I wasn’t the one people looked to first. And even now, after decades of experience, after building a life I’m genuinely proud of, there’s still a part of me that wonders if I’m out of my depth.
And maybe that’s why the first impression I want to give people isn’t about being charming or funny or instantly likable.
I want to be taken seriously.
I want people’s first instinct to be, “He’s competent. He knows what he’s doing.”
Not arrogant. Not showy. Just solid.
I want to come across as someone whose intelligence is real, not performative. Someone whose thoughts are worth hearing. Someone who belongs in the conversation—not on the outside of it.
Because I’ve spent years working on myself. Learning. Earning the right to hold my own. Fighting that old voice that still tries to whisper that I’m less than. So when I meet people for the first time, what I really hope is that they see the version of me I’ve worked hard to become.
Someone capable.
Someone confident, even if I have to grow into it a little every day.
Someone worthy of their time and their respect.
If that’s the impression I can leave—just that—I’ll take it as a small but meaningful victory over the parts of me that still doubt.
