Tuesday Question: What personality trait in people raises a red flag with you?
For me, it’s dishonesty. And I don’t just mean the big, obvious lies—though those are bad enough. It shows up in all sorts of ways. People who claim accomplishments they haven’t earned. People who retell events in ways that you know simply aren’t true. Students who cheat on tests, plagiarize papers, or pass off AI work as their own. Politicians who brazenly misrepresent facts to push an agenda.
The problem with dishonesty is that it chips away at the foundation of trust. Once trust is gone, it’s nearly impossible to rebuild. A dishonest person may think they’re gaining ground in the short term, but what they’re really doing is creating cracks in every relationship they touch. Lies—whether they’re small, “harmless” ones or large, destructive ones—always leave damage behind.
I’ve always believed that honesty is the bedrock of character. It doesn’t mean being perfect; it just means being real. I’ll gladly deal with someone who’s blunt or even difficult if they’re truthful, because at least I know where I stand. But when dishonesty enters the picture, the red flag goes up immediately. I have no use for it.
