Tuesday Tasting: Is Heritage Barrel Worth the Hype? A Jack Daniel’s Blind Tasting

Every once in a while, a bottle jumps off the shelf and says take me home. That’s what happened when I stumbled onto a Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Heritage Barrel Toasted at Shores Liquors. Folks have been clamoring for this release, so I had to see if the buzz—and the $90 price tag—was justified.

To keep things interesting, I lined it up blind against Jack Daniel’s Bonded ($30) and Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select ($47). Same mashbill across the board, but different proofs, finishes, and price points. Here’s how it went down.

Glencairn #1 – Heritage Barrel Toasted

  • Color: Solid copper

  • Nose: Classic Jack—caramel, vanilla, graham cracker, light banana

  • Palate: A pop of proof and spice, then waves of creamy caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, and graham cracker

  • Mouthfeel: Rich and creamy

  • Finish: Modest but warm, led by caramel

  • Score: 85.5

This was the standout from the start—layered, smooth, and deeply satisfying.

Glencairn #2 – Bonded

  • Color: Light copper

  • Nose: Some ethanol, but banana, caramel, and vanilla peek through

  • Palate: Ethanol hit first, then butterscotch, graham cracker, vanilla, banana, and oak

  • Mouthfeel: Solid, not creamy, but balanced

  • Finish: Modest—oak, baking spice, banana, caramel

  • Score: 80.8

This one surprised me. Bonded drinks way above its price point.

Glencairn #3 – Single Barrel Select

  • Color: Light copper

  • Nose: Ethanol, then banana, vanilla, caramel

  • Palate: Spicy, with vanilla in the lead and caramel trailing

  • Mouthfeel: The weakest of the three

  • Finish: Surprisingly strong, with spice and vanilla lingering

  • Score: 79.1

A solid pour, but in this lineup, it came in last.

The Reveal & Final Thoughts

The guesses turned out right:

  1. Heritage Barrel Toasted

  2. Bonded

  3. Single Barrel Select

The Heritage was the clear winner, though at $90 it felt a little steep. If it truly becomes a regular release and the price settles down, I’ll happily keep one around.

The real revelation? Bonded. For $30, it outperformed Single Barrel Select and earned a permanent spot on my shelf. That’s one heck of a return on investment.
