For some, it’s a mansion on a hill—marble floors, sweeping staircases, and a kitchen worthy of a Food Network spotlight. For others, it’s a tiny cabin tucked deep in the woods, warmed by a wood-burning stove and blessed with a porch swing that creaks in all the right ways.
Me? My ideal home has little to do with square footage and everything to do with soul.
It’s a place where the walls have heard laughter—plenty of it. Maybe some music, too. Probably Toto spinning on the record player, or Boz Scaggs drifting through the air. The kitchen smells like fresh coffee in the morning and something slow-cooked by evening. Dogs nap in sun patches. Bookshelves are just barely overflowing. And the living room catches that soft, golden-hour light when everything feels possible.
It wouldn’t be perfect. There might be a stubborn doorknob, a floorboard that creaks like it’s trying to start a conversation, or a leaky faucet that never quite got fixed. But there’d also be dance parties in the kitchen. Bourbon poured for toasts—or for quiet, contemplative evenings. A chair by the window just right for writing, wondering, or both.
Most of all, it would be a place where people feel loved the moment they walk in. Not because of the décor, but because of the welcome.
That’s the kind of home I want. And if I’m lucky, I think I’m already building it—one conversation, one memory, one story at a time.
So tell me: What does your ideal home look like?
