It’s time to make a few calls

Daily writing prompt
You get some great, amazingly fantastic news. What’s the first thing you do?

I’m very blessed to have a life partner – my wife, Daryl – who shares everything with me. We’ve had some very high highs (such as the births of our three grandchildren) and some very low lows (such as the deaths of my father and stepfather). When there’s any big news – good or bad – she will always be the first call I make. That goes without even needing to be said.

The second call I would make is to my daughter, Lizzi. I’m also blessed to have a child who is one of my best friends in the world. One of the great things about that is that she has such a good head on her shoulders and is wise beyond her 26 years. I don’t talk to her about everything (some things need to stay private and shouldn’t be between a parent and child), but she is a wonderful confidant and she’s always included in the good and great news.

The third call is to my best friend, Scott. A lot of people have a broad base of friends and even have more than one best friend. I have several good friends but only one best friend, and that’s Scott. We’ve known each other for about 35 years and we’ve been each other’s best man and godfather to each other’s children. When times get tough, he’s someone I can always go to to help me figure things out. If I have any amazing news, I might not only call him – I might actually get a plane ticket to Nashville and go celebrate with him in person!

A college journalism major, he now works as an English teacher, but gets his writing fix by blogging about a variety of topics, including politics, religion, movies and television.
