Routines are important to me for no other reason than because I struggle with ADHD, and routines help me cope with things I frequently forget. I’d rather never skip parts of my daily routine because I’ll eventually drop the ball on something important.
Of course, there are parts of my daily life as a teacher that I don’t love – things like record-keeping and grades. Again, these aren’t things I can just kick to the curb. Grading and lesson planning can be tedious, but I’ll never accomplish anything without a plan. Likewise, without grading, students never know where they stand. I may not love the routine, but I need to embrace it.
Honestly, I need to perfect the routine to accomplish it more efficiently (meaning, spending less time on it). The administrative part of life is my least favorite, but to ignore it would be like not paying my bills because I don’t like writing the checks. It’s a lot wiser to get to the uncomfortable things first so that I have more time for the enjoyable things.
