USA Top 40, 1.9.21: Happy New Year, Adele — but the rest of the chart still looks like Christmas

The last two months of 2021 were dominated by the latest release from Adele — “Easy On Me — which reigned unchallenged at No. 1 for six straight weeks. Not surprisingly, Adele started 2022 where it left off, picking up its seventh straight week at No. 1. “Stay,” by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber, is losing a little steam, but it still easily claimed the No. 2 spot, followed by Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves.” The rest of the Top 5 was filled out by “Industry Baby” by Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow, and “Shivers” by Ed Sheeran.

Outside of the Top 5, the biggest story in this week’s Top 40 is that it’s still Christmas. Of the 35 remaining songs in the countdown, 18 of them are Christmas themed, led by Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” which has charted for the past seven weeks. The biggest non-Christmas entry into the chart was “Broadway Girls” by Lil Durk & Morgan Wallen, which debuted at No. 17.

There was one notable exit from this week’s chart — “You Right,” by Doja Cat & The Weeknd. This song finished 2021 as the year’s No. 27 song, and spent 26 weeks on the chart, peaking at No. 11.

Here is the updated chart for the week of January 9, 2022. Each song is linked to its official video on YouTube, where possible. To listen to the full playlist of these songs, visit our page on Spotify.
