Apparently, Yesterday Needed a Sequel
Friday asked for a risk I took and didn’t regret. Saturday asked when I last took a risk and how it worked out. At some point, even the writing prompts start recycling themselves. Continue reading

Some Lessons High School Taught Me (A Few of Them the Hard Way)
High school taught me a lot, and not all of it came from the front of a classroom. Some lessons were obvious only after the fact. For example: if you struggle with Algebra, signing up for Math Analysis is less … Continue reading

Teaching in the Digital Age
Technology has made teaching faster, broader, and in many ways more efficient—but it has also introduced distractions, new demands, and challenges that teachers from earlier generations never had to navigate. Continue reading

The Teachers Who Built Me
Some teachers taught subjects. Others taught discipline, trust, creativity, faith, or endurance. Looking back, the most honest answer is that it took several people — each arriving at the right time — to help shape who I became. Continue reading

The Question I Pretend Not to Hear
In my classroom every request has to include one simple word: please. Without it, I pretend not to hear the question. But there’s one request students ask more than any other — and it always leads to the same series of terrible puns. Continue reading

My Long, Winding, Occasionally Uninvited College Tour
I attended college the hard way — with false starts, one official uninvitation, a detour through the U.S. Air Force, and a community college class that accidentally changed my life. It turns out learning sticks better when you’re finally ready to show up. Continue reading
Holding Convictions Without a Megaphone
My beliefs haven’t shifted nearly as much as the way I carry them. Time, experience, and the responsibility of teaching have taught me that equipping young minds matters far more than persuading them. Conviction doesn’t require volume—and instruction should never become indoctrination. Continue reading

Comfort Food for the Mind — and Why We Still Need a 5-Course Meal
We’re not getting dumber. We’re just not being invited to stretch. In a world of entertainment built for ease, we’ve forgotten how to feed our minds something that challenges us. It’s time to set the table for something more. Continue reading

🪙 A Million Ways to Give
If I had a million dollars to give away, I wouldn’t give it all to one place. I’d spread it among the people and causes that shaped me—faith, family, compassion, and education. Continue reading

Ban “6-7” (And While We’re at It, Let’s Redefine “Poop”)
Slang evolves. I understand that. But when students toss around “6-7” without realizing it traces back to a police code for a reported death, it isn’t edgy—it’s uninformed. Words carry weight. If we’re going to redefine everything because it sounds cool in a lyric or on TikTok, we might as well make “poop” mean delicious and “detention” mean spa day. At least then we’d know we were being ridiculous on purpose. Continue reading →
