Friday Question: If you had a million dollars to give away, who would you give it to?
A million dollars sounds like a lot—until you start thinking about all the people and causes that have touched your life. Suddenly, it feels like nowhere near enough. I couldn’t give it all to one place. I’d want to spread the blessing around.
First off, I’d give back to my church, All Souls Anglican. They’ve been a cornerstone in my life and in my community. I’d tithe—and then some—probably around $250,000, because I know they’d use it well.
That leaves $750,000, and from there I’d focus on causes that have affected my family. I’d give $100,000 each to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation, Community Hospice and Palliative Care, the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the American Heart Association. Those organizations represent battles my parents and grandparents fought, and it feels right to honor them that way.
With $50,000 each, I’d also support the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research and the American Diabetes Association—both close to home in my extended family.
That leaves $150,000. My church sponsors an incredible group called His Big House, and I’d give them $50,000 to keep their work going strong for years.
The final $100,000 would go toward something near to my heart—education. I’d love to start a foundation for my school that could meet student needs throughout the year: supplies, event costs, scholarships—and a program I’d especially love to fund called The Amazing Shake. It’s a competition started by the Ron Clark Academy that teaches students the power of confidence, communication, and, yes, a great handshake. I’d want our students to have the chance to compete nationally and bring those lessons home.
In the end, it’s not just about giving money away. It’s about investing in the things that made me who I am: faith, family, compassion, and education.
