Game Above Sports Bowl
Friday, Dec. 26| 1 p.m. ET | ESPN
Ford Field — Detroit, Michigan
Central Michigan (7-5) vs. Northwestern (6-6)
Line: Northwestern -10.5 | O/U: 43.5
The Setup
This one feels like a throwback, and that’s fitting. The GameAbove Sports Bowl (formerly the Quick Lane Bowl) returns to Ford Field with a very on-brand matchup: Central Michigan Chippewas vs. Northwestern Wildcats. Big Ten muscle versus MAC grit. Indoors, in December. Pads popping, clock running.
Don’t expect fireworks. Expect trench work.
Central Michigan
The Chippewas bounced back to bowl eligibility with a solid 7-5 season under first-year head coach Matt Drinkall. Quarterback Joey Labas (around 1,700 passing yards, 12 TDs) manages the game efficiently, leaning on a balanced attack that averages nearly 170 rushing yards per game. Their defense forces turnovers (20+ this season, including a dozen interceptions) and could exploit any Northwestern mistakes. CMU is motivated for their first bowl since 2021 and thrives as underdogs.
Northwestern
In year three under David Braun, the Wildcats scraped to 6-6 despite a tough Big Ten slate, with notable wins over bowl teams like Penn State and Minnesota. They rely on a run-heavy identity and improved fundamentals late in the year, keeping games against ranked opponents close. The defense is opportunistic, and with minimal transfer portal losses, they’ll likely be at full strength. Northwestern aims to cap a developmental season with a win and prove they’re competitive in the Big Ten.
Key Storylines
- Style clash — Both offenses prioritize the run while shutting down the pass—think old-school, smash-mouth football.
- Motivation — Low opt-outs mean motivated rosters ready to end on a high note.
- History — This bowl often delivers close games (13 of the last 16 decided by one score).
The Pick
Northwestern enters as favorites (around -10.5 points), thanks to the Power conference edge, but don’t sleep on Central Michigan’s upset potential. Look for a defensive battle with the Wildcats pulling away late.
Prediction: Northwestern 27, Central Michigan 17.
