FIU (7-5) vs. UTSA (6-6)
Line: UTSA -6.5 | O/U: 59.5
The Setup
A former Conference USA rivalry renews in this Group of 5 showdown, with the series tied 2-2 all-time (UTSA won the last meeting 30-10 in 2022). Both teams feature explosive offenses but porous defenses, setting up a potential shootout in the Lone Star State to cap Friday’s bowl slate.
FIU
In his first season, head coach Willie Simmons turned around a program that hadn’t reached a bowl since 2019, riding a four-game win streak into postseason play (including wins over Jacksonville State and Western Kentucky). Sophomore QB Keyone Jenkins has been dynamic, throwing for over 2,800 yards with 20+ TDs while adding rushing threat. The offense ranks top-40 nationally in yards per play (~6.2), but the defense struggles mightily (106th in yards allowed, ~420/game) despite forcing havoc in the secondary (top-20 in passes defended, 12 INTs). Reports indicate the secondary is thinned by portal entries/opt-outs, which could be exploited.
UTSA
Jeff Traylor’s squad secured bowl eligibility for the sixth straight year, aiming for a third consecutive bowl win. The Roadrunners boast a high-powered attack (top-30 in scoring, ~32 points/game) with playmakers like RB Robert Henry Jr. and WR Devin McCuin earning all-conference honors. However, Traylor has publicly noted the team will be “a shell of themselves,” expecting 10-20 absences from opt-outs, injuries, and portal losses—particularly hitting the defense hard (several starters out). UTSA ranks mid-pack in total defense but has been vulnerable on the road (dropped 10 of last 13 away games).
Key Storylines
- Offensive fireworks: Both teams love to score—FIU averages ~28 points/game, UTSA ~32; combined, they’ve hit the over in 60%+ of games. Recent First Responder Bowls often feature points (average ~55 total in last five completed games).
- Defensive vulnerabilities: FIU allows ~28 points/game (bottom-40); UTSA’s depleted unit could worsen that. UTSA ranks outside top-80 in pass defense (~240 yards allowed/game).
- Turnovers and efficiency: FIU forces ~1.5 takeaways/game (top-40); UTSA is plus in margin but loses key disruptors.
- Motivation/portal impact: FIU appears more intact and motivated for their first bowl in six years; UTSA’s heavy losses tilt the scales.
- History: Four of the last six First Responder Bowls decided by 7 points or fewer; undersized defenses suggest high total (~59-60 O/U).
The Pick
UTSA enters as favorites (~ -6.5 to -9.5 points), but the opt-out disparity makes FIU the sharper side. Expect a track meet with the Panthers’ momentum prevailing.
Prediction: FIU 38, UTSA 34
