The Bourbon Cheapskate, Vol. 8: Barton Quality for Under $20

Sam’s Club may not be the first place you think of when you’re on the hunt for a solid bourbon, but it turns out they’ve got a real sleeper on their shelves. Under the Member’s Mark label, Sam’s Club offers a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey that comes from none other than Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. Yes—the same Barton that produces the 1792 line. And the kicker? A 750ml bottle costs less than twenty bucks.

That’s right: $18.98 for a Kentucky straight bourbon made by a respected Kentucky distillery. This has “Bourbon Cheapskate” written all over it.

My Tasting Notes

  • Color: Light copper.
  • Nose: Classic bourbon notes of caramel, vanilla, oak, and a bit of nuttiness.
  • Palate: Peanut butter right up front, layered with cinnamon and nutmeg, then the familiar caramel and vanilla sweetness. It’s not overly complex, but there are a few layers worth noticing.
  • Mouthfeel: Not thin, not creamy—more on the silky side, letting the flavors linger just enough.
  • Finish: Modest but pleasant, with caramel and spice carrying through.
  • Overall Impression: Honestly, this wouldn’t be a terrible deal at $30. But under $20? It’s a GREAT deal. I haven’t tested it in an Old Fashioned yet, but I’d be shocked if it didn’t shine there. For now, I can vouch for it neat—it more than holds its own.

Why It Works as a Bourbon Cheapskate Pick

  1. Price-to-Quality Ratio: You’re paying less than $20 for something that drinks like a mid-shelf bourbon. That’s a rare sweet spot these days.
  2. Solid Provenance: Barton 1792 is a legit Kentucky producer with a strong track record. This isn’t sourced mystery juice—it’s the real deal.
  3. Versatility: Good enough neat, more than capable in a cocktail. At this price, you don’t feel guilty about mixing, but you won’t feel shortchanged sipping it either.
  4. Value Benchmark: In the current bourbon climate, where $40 bottles are starting to feel “entry level,” this bottle proves you can still drink well without wrecking your budget.

Final Word

Member’s Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon is one of those bottles that reminds you why the hunt for value matters. It’s not a collectible. It’s not trying to impress you with a fancy label or limited release hype. It’s just a good, honest pour at a price that makes sense.

In other words, the Bourbon Cheapskate stamp of approval is secure.
