USA Top 40, 9.18.21: Drake invades the chart, but ‘Stay’ remains dominant at the top

One week after it dropped, Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” album is dominating the Top 40, with 15 of its tracks landing on the chart and the other six sitting just outside on the Side Burner chart. The wave of new songs practically erased Kayne West from the chart, sending six of his seven songs from a week ago into exile. Meanwhile, one song continued to be in a class by itself — “Stay” by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber. While every other track suffered somewhat from the Drake effect, “Stay” remained in the top 10 of every index that we track except for one, resulting in its remaining at No. 1 for a fourth straight week. The remaining songs in the Top 5 are the same as last week, but in a different order. Ed Sheeran’s “Bad Habits” rose one spot to No. 2, “Industry Baby” by Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow jumped two places to No. 3, “good 4 u” by Olivia Rodrigo dropped two spots to No. 4 and Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More” fell one spot to No. 5.

Rodrigo’s “deja vu” was one victim of the shakeup, falling out of the Top 10 and the Top 20. Until this week, “deja vu” had never been outside of the Top 10 since its debut 23 weeks ago. Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” also took a hit, falling outside the Top 10 for the first time since May 15. The biggest drop was in store for The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears,” which fell outside of the Top 20 for the first time since it appeared on the chart on January 23.

Not only did Drake add nine songs to the countdown, but the six that were there last week had massive jumps of 25 spots or more. At the same time, 14 of last week’s Top 40 had significant drops of five or more places. There was also one significant exit from the Top 40 — Giveon’s “Heartbreak Anniversary,” which had spent 25 weeks on the chart.
