Troy (8-5) vs. Jacksonville State (8-5)
Salute to Veterans Bowl
Tuesday | 9 p.m. ET | ESPN
Cramton Bowl — Montgomery, Alabama
Line: Troy -2.5
The Salute to Veterans Bowl brings together two programs that entered the season with high expectations — and now arrive in Montgomery trying to reframe how their years are remembered.
Troy and Jacksonville State both earned spots in their respective conference championship games. Both believed they were ready for that stage. And both walked away disappointed, leaving this bowl matchup as a test of resilience, preparation, and perspective rather than pure momentum.
Troy Trojans Overview
Troy’s season has been defined by physicality and defensive reliability. The Trojans once again leaned on a disciplined, hard-nosed defense to navigate the Sun Belt, limiting explosive plays and forcing opponents to sustain long drives.
That identity carried Troy into the conference title game, but the matchup with James Madison exposed the gap between Troy and the very top of the league. The Trojans were outmatched up front and never fully recovered. Still, that experience matters. Troy has faced a higher level of competition on a weekly basis and has been tested repeatedly against speed, depth, and physical fronts.
Offensively, Troy has been uneven. When the Trojans control tempo and stay balanced, they’re capable of putting together methodical scoring drives. When they fall behind or are forced out of rhythm, consistency becomes an issue. The good news for Troy is that bowl games often favor teams that can win defensively and stay composed late — two areas where the Trojans are comfortable.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks Overview
Jacksonville State has continued its impressive transition into FBS football with another strong season. The Gamecocks play with confidence, toughness, and a clear identity built around physical offense and clock control.
That identity centers on the run game, particularly Cam Cook and Caden Creel. When Jacksonville State is at its best, those two dictate tempo, keep the offense on schedule, and turn games into grind-it-out affairs that limit possessions and increase pressure on the opponent.
Cook and Creel demonstrated that potential in the Conference USA Championship Game, combining for nearly 200 rushing yards and two touchdowns against Kennesaw State. Jacksonville State largely succeeded in executing its preferred game plan — and still lost.
That result matters. It highlights how narrow the Gamecocks’ margin for error can be, even when the run game is effective. Against a Troy defense that is accustomed to facing physical rushing attacks and has seen a higher overall level of competition, Jacksonville State may need more than just ground success to pull this one out.
Key Matchups to Watch
- Troy’s defensive front vs. Jacksonville State’s run game
If Troy can limit early-down success and prevent Cook and Creel from fully controlling tempo, the Trojans gain a significant edge. - Jacksonville State’s ability to finish drives
Long possessions must end in touchdowns, not field goals, to capitalize on their style of play. - Fourth-quarter composure
With two evenly matched teams on a neutral field, late execution and mistake avoidance could decide the outcome.
Neutral Site, Familiar Territory
Cramton Bowl offers no true home-field advantage. Troy is just 57 miles from Montgomery; Jacksonville State is roughly 123 miles away. Crowd support should be relatively balanced, putting the emphasis squarely on preparation rather than atmosphere.
Prediction
This game sets up as a physical, competitive bowl that stays tight into the final minutes. Jacksonville State has a clear blueprint for success, but it’s a fragile one that leaves little room for error.
Troy’s experience against stronger competition and its defensive steadiness give the Trojans a slight but meaningful edge when the game tightens late.
Prediction: Troy 27, Jacksonville State 24
