Tasting Tuesday — Jack Daniel’s Three-Way Showdown

Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey vs. Toasted Pecan Finish vs. Barrel Proof Rye

Tonight’s Tasting Tuesday puts three of my top-10 bottles on the same stage — three Jack Daniel’s heavy-hitters that never miss:

  • Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey finished with Toasted Pecan Wood Chips

  • Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey

  • Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye

All three are bangers. All three live on the top shelf for a reason. And tonight, instead of scoring them, I’m going category by category to see how they stack up.

Color

Separating these is almost impossible. A and C look nearly identical; B trails by only a slight shade.

1st — A & C | 3rd — B

Nose

We’re splitting hairs already.

  • A: Absolute glory — the full banana-split experience. Chocolate, banana, caramel, vanilla, and even a cherry note.

  • B: Similar profile but milder, and with less banana.

  • C: Tracks closely with B.

All three beg for the first sip.

1st — A | 2nd — B & C

Palate

The fun begins.

  • A: Dessert in a glass. Chocolate-covered bananas dominate, backed by caramel and vanilla.

  • B: Milk chocolate and baking spice lead the way. Not quite as rich as A, but still warm, sweet, and satisfying.

  • C: Chocolate and caramel take center stage, with a slightly higher proof feel and flavors that come through most clearly.

1st — C | 2nd — A | 3rd — B

Complexity

None of these are overly complex, but each delivers layered flavors that unfold beautifully.

  • C has just a bit more going on.

  • A follows closely.

  • B sits slightly behind.

1st — C | 2nd — A | 3rd — B

Mouthfeel

I expected a three-way tie, but the sip tells the truth: B lags behind the other two by a hair.

(Which made me start guessing that A and C were the single barrels.)

1st — A & C | 3rd — B

Finish

All three deliver.

  • A: Long, lingering chocolate-banana finish.

  • B: Suddenly comes alive — spicy, bold, and easily the standout.

  • C: Warm, lengthy, and just a shade behind B while sitting ahead of A.

1st — B | 2nd — C | 3rd — A

Final Tally

  • Glencairn A: 14 points

  • Glencairn B: 9 points

  • Glencairn C: 16 points

The Reveal

  • A — Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey

  • B — Tennessee Whiskey finished with toasted pecan wood chips

  • C — Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye

Final Thoughts

The only surprise? I was convinced A was the rye and C was the Tennessee Whiskey. But the blind told the same story my shelf order has told for months:

  1. Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye — still the king of the cabinet.

  2. Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey — consistently excellent.

  3. Toasted Pecan Finish — my No. 7 overall, and still an easy everyday “yes.”

Today’s tasting confirmed what I already suspected: all three of these bottles justify their spots in my top 10. I’d happily pour any of them any day of the week.
