Defining “Cartoon” (And Why Bugs Bunny Still Wins)

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite cartoon?

WordPress really needs to refine its questions. “What’s your favorite cartoon?” That’s a wide-open question without a lane marker in sight. Are we talking comic book cartoons? Animated feature films? Saturday morning classics? Depending on which category you choose, the answer changes dramatically.

If we mean comic book cartoon, that one’s easy — Batman.
If we mean animated feature film, look no further than Beauty and the Beast. Still an absolute masterpiece.

But if we’re talking Saturday morning cartoons, well… that answer hasn’t changed since I was a kid. I was, am, and always will be crazy for Bugs Bunny. Saturday mornings meant one thing in my house: The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour.

What’s funny is that I appreciate Bugs even more as an adult. Back then, the slapstick was enough. Now I get the wit, the timing, the wordplay, and the subtle jokes that went flying over my head. The Warner Brothers animators and writers operated at a level of brilliance that still amazes me — crafting cartoons that remain laugh-out-loud funny decades later.

From Duck, Rabbit, Duck to Baseball Bugs to Ali Baba Bunny to A-Lad in His Lamp, Bugs has never failed to bring a smile to my face. Introducing him to my daughter was a joy, and I’m looking forward to doing the same thing with Sully and his little sister.
