If You Could Live Anywhere In the World

Daily writing prompt
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

If I could live anywhere, I think I’d choose Chattanooga.

It’s one of those towns that seems to hum at the perfect tempo — slow enough to breathe, alive enough to keep you curious. The Tennessee River curves through downtown like a silver ribbon, and the mountains rise gently around it, giving the skyline both strength and softness. I could picture Daryl and me sitting on a back porch overlooking the valley, morning coffee in hand, watching the fog lift off Lookout Mountain.

What I like most about Chattanooga is that it feels balanced. It has an arts district, a symphony, theater, great restaurants, and a small but vibrant downtown that never quite feels crowded. You can hear live music on a Friday night and still find a quiet trail by Saturday morning. And unlike a lot of cities that call themselves “mountain towns,” this one feels genuinely connected to both nature and culture.

There’s the practical side, too — Tennessee doesn’t have a state income tax, which appeals to the Floridian in me. And geographically, it’s right where life fits: just two hours from Lizzi and her family in the Atlanta area, and a day’s drive back to Jacksonville when we need to see Daryl’s children and grandkids. We could visit both sides of our family without having to choose between them.

It’s hard to find a place that checks every box, but Chattanooga comes close. There’s peace there without the loneliness that sometimes follows peace. It’s a place where the mountains listen, where the river keeps its steady rhythm, and where you can still find connection — to family, to art, and to the quiet spaces in between.

If home is where your people are, then I suppose mine would sit right about there — on a bend in the river, with a porch that faces the sunset and enough road left ahead for a few more good drives home.
