When it comes to brands, I’m really not that loyal. There are a few exceptions: McDonald’s over Burger King (though both will equally kill me). Coca-Cola over Pepsi (seriously—why does anyone like Pepsi? It’s sickeningly sweet with very little flavor other than diabetes). Ford over Chevy, which is why, of course, I drive a Honda.
For most things, though, I go with whatever’s cheap and effective. I’m the guy who looks for the best knock-off of whatever brand is all the rage. Remember, I’m the Bourbon Cheapskate guy—the one searching for a $40 pour that costs $20, or an $80 bottle that costs $40. Brands are a great way to spend all of your money and wind up with slightly better quality and no money in your pockets.
And sometimes, the brand name isn’t even a guarantee. I once got a pair of Nike sneakers from a thrift store, and they were the squeakiest shoes I’ve ever owned. Every step sounded like a mouse convention. I finally replaced them with a pair of Walmart specials that weren’t nearly as comfortable but at least didn’t disrupt my students every time I walked by.
Then there’s the Euhomy ice maker in my kitchen—a machine that sounds like a jet engine and occasionally screams like a scalded child while trying to make ice cubes. Maybe the Frigidaire would’ve been a better idea.
So yes, I have a few brand preferences, but mostly I’m a skeptic. Show me something that works, doesn’t break the bank, and doesn’t squeak down the hallway, and I’m in.
What about you? Are there brands you’re loyal to—or are you a cheapskate like me?
