The Space Between My Thoughts

Sometimes I write because I have something to say. Other times, I write because something inside me needs to breathe — and a pour of good bourbon doesn’t always cut it.

I blog because my thoughts need somewhere to land. They rattle around in my head — memories, stories, questions, moments of clarity, moments of pain — until they find their way to the page. Writing gives those thoughts a destination. It’s a space where I can reflect, wrestle with ideas, remember what matters, and reach out to others in the process.

I blog because I want to leave something behind. Words last longer than I do. One day, my daughter or grandson might scroll through these posts and catch a glimpse of who I really was — what I cared about, how I loved, what I believed, and how I tried to make sense of the world. Maybe they’ll hear my voice between the lines.

I blog because I’m still learning. Sure, I’m a teacher — but I’m also a student in the classroom of life. Just the other day, a student asked if I’d accomplished all my life’s goals. I told them I hope not. Because the day I stop having goals is the day I stop growing.

Writing helps me sort through the mess and mystery. It forces me to slow down and pay attention to the details of my own life. And maybe — if I’m paying close enough attention — someone else might read these words and feel a little less alone.

I don’t blog because I have all the answers. I blog because I’m full of questions — about faith, family, justice, joy, aging, bourbon (especially why the good stuff is always on the top shelf), education, loss, and love. This blog becomes a journal I don’t mind leaving open — a place where curiosity is welcome and vulnerability has room to breathe.

So why do I blog?

Because writing helps me live better — like a good pour after a long day or a student’s unexpected thank-you note.

And if it helps someone else live better too. That’s a story worth sharing.
