I’m pretty basic in my style choices. Most days I wear a pair of slacks or khakis and one of my myriad Polo-style shirts. Every now and then I’ll throw in a long-sleeve shirt, but my look from day to day is pretty much the same. For the last year, the one variable has been a hat.
Of course, when I say hat, it’s not just one hat. I have at least 13 hats on a rack in my room, and I’ll frequently pick one at random to wear while I’m out. I was inspired a while back by two hat-wearing men – Indiana Jones and Frank Sinatra. I love the hats that both men wear, though the styles are quite different. Indiana’s felt, outback-style fedora has an adventuresome air about it, while Frank wore felt of a different variety, much more in keeping with the styles of the 1940s and 1950s.
One day I looked at my phone and saw Frank on my screen and I just decided, “I’m going to start wearing hats.” It’s become a trademark for me, so much so that one teacher at school just started to call me “Fedora.” I miss the classic styles of the 1940s, and I often feel I’d be more at home in a film noir than in the current era. Give me my hat, a shot of bourbon and my best girl at my side and I’d be as happy as a clam at high tide.
So today, there’s just one question – what hat will I wear today?
