Armed Forces Bowl

Amon G. Carter Stadium — Fort Worth, Texas
Rice (5-7) vs. Texas State (6-6)
Line: Texas State –16.5 | O/U: 56.5
The Setup
An in-state rematch of the 2023 First Responder Bowl (Texas State won 45-21) headlines this Group of 5 clash—Rice sneaking in at 5-7 via high APR after some eligible teams declined bids, while Texas State rallied late for their third straight bowl under G.J. Kinne. Expect an explosive, high-scoring affair if Texas State’s offense clicks against Rice’s thinned roster.
Rice Owls
First-year head coach Scott Abell guided a rebuilding Owls squad to an unexpected postseason, but portal/opt-outs hit hard: starting QB Chase Jenkins (portal), top WR Drayden Dickmann (portal), RB Daelen Alexander (portal), RG Tellek Lockette (portal/injury), and others. Backup Drew Devillier (limited experience, ~137 yards in relief) or Patrick Crayton Jr. steps up behind a committee run game. The defense ranked poorly in red-zone stops (last nationally). Motivation is high for Abell’s first bowl and Rice’s first win since 2014.
Texas State Bobcats
Head coach G.J. Kinne has the Bobcats bowling for the third straight year (2-0 in bowls), closing strong with three dominant wins. Freshman QB Brad Jackson (~3,050 passing yards, 18 TDs) fuels a top-15 scoring offense, targeting WRs Beau Sparks (80 catches, 1,113 yards, 9 TDs) and Chris Dawn Jr.. RB Lincoln Pare adds balance. The defense has playmakers like DL Kalil Alexander. Virtually no major opt-outs keep Texas State nearly intact and aiming for a perfect 3-0 bowl record.
Key Storylines
- Rematch fireworks — Texas State blew out Rice 45-21 two years ago; Bobcats average ~36 points/game (top-15 nationally).
- QB/attrition gap — Jackson’s efficiency vs. Rice’s inexperienced backup; Owls lose continuity up front and in skill positions.
- Offense vs. defense — Texas State’s explosiveness vs. Rice’s bottom-tier red-zone D; Armed Forces Bowls often high-scoring when G5 offenses shine.
- Motivation — Rice plays with house money (first bowl win since 2014?); Texas State chases history (undefeated in bowls). O/U ~57.5.
- Trends — Texas State 2-0 ATS as double-digit favorites lately; line moved to Bobcats after Rice QB news.
The Pick
Texas State enters as heavy favorites (~ -15 to -16.5 points) due to roster health, Jackson’s playmaking, and the 2023 blueprint overwhelming Rice’s disruptions. The Bobcats light up the scoreboard for a multi-score cover.
Prediction: Texas State 42, Rice 24.
