There are a few lessons life teaches slowly, but surely. Some come from heartbreak, some from grace, and some from watching the quiet strength of someone who simply chooses the right thing again and again.
My mom used to remind us that our actions are choices—always choices. Taking offense is a choice. So is showing grace. Being kind is a choice. So is being loving, forgiving, and truthful. She never said it like she was preaching; she just lived it out in small, everyday ways that left no doubt what mattered most.
I’ve thought about that a lot lately, how she had such an impact on everyone around her—not because she was loud or commanding, but because she chose kindness, patience, and love when it would’ve been easier not to. Those choices built her legacy.
And that’s what I want my life to reflect, too. Not perfection, not success by anyone else’s measure, but a pattern of choices that point toward goodness. The kind of difference that lingers in the room after you’ve left it.
Everyone should know that who we become isn’t about what happens to us—it’s about what we choose in response. If we can learn that, we’ll live lives that matter, not because they’re easy, but because they’re full of the kind of love that outlasts us.
