This week, I lined up three Jack Daniel’s stalwarts from my shelf to see which one really wears the crown:
-
Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Finished with Toasted Pecan
-
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey
-
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye
Three favorites. Three heavyweights. But which one is king?
I decided to do this in two rounds—first, a straight head-to-head tasting. Then, I added a combination of oak, pecan, and cherry smoke to each glass and went back for another round.
Round One: Neat
Glencairn A
-
Color: Rich copper, almost mahogany.
-
Nose: Sweet, with cherry, chocolate, caramel. Less banana than I’d expect from Jack.
-
Palate: Heat out of the gate, balanced by spice. Cherry and chocolate stay strong, with banana finally peeking through.
-
Finish: Viscous, lingering with dark chocolate.
-
Score: 91.0
Glencairn B
-
Color: Same rich copper.
-
Nose: Banana jumps quickly, alongside chocolate, candied cherries, and vanilla.
-
Palate: Spicy entry, creamy mouthfeel, cherries leading with caramel, chocolate, and vanilla. Less banana than the nose suggested.
-
Finish: Warm, cherry-chocolate linger.
-
Score: 91.0
Glencairn C
-
Color: Same as the others.
-
Nose: Proof is bold. Banana, caramel, and a touch of chocolate push through.
-
Palate: Spicy, but balanced. Cherry leads, with vanilla, caramel, chocolate, and faint banana.
-
Finish: Tart cherries, milk chocolate, and caramel hold on.
-
Score: 91.3
➡️ Edge to Glencairn C.
Round Two: Smoked (Oak + Pecan + Cherry)
Glencairn A
-
Sweeter, with cherry dominating. Chocolate and vanilla follow.
-
Mouthfeel unchanged, finish boosted with smoky cherry and dark chocolate.
-
Score: 91.9 | Avg: 91.5
Glencairn B
-
Smoke adds spice here. Cherries shift to sweet-and-sour, milk chocolate to dark.
-
Creamy mouthfeel remains, finish smoky and sour but tasty.
-
Score: 91.1 | Avg: 91.1
Glencairn C
-
Spice builds steadily. Sweet-and-sour cherries, dark chocolate, caramel.
-
Finish improves: tart cherries with caramel stepping forward.
-
Score: 91.6 | Avg: 91.5
➡️ A tie between A and C. One more head-to-head pour decided it: Glencairn C’s sour cherry burst sealed the win.
The Reveal
-
Glencairn A: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey
-
Glencairn B: Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Finished With Toasted Pecan
-
Glencairn C: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye
🏆 Winner: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye
Final Thoughts
Honestly, all three are winners. The smoke didn’t shift the rankings much, but it amplified some notes beautifully. The rye’s consistency and bold sour-cherry character carried the day.
A quick shelf check reminded me: I’ve got 12 different Jack Daniel’s bottles on hand. Jack gets plenty of attention as a whiskey celebrity, but behind the marketing is truly great whiskey. These barrel proof single barrels—both bourbon and rye—are phenomenal, and I’d recommend them to any fan of high-proof, full-flavored whiskey.
As for the pecan-finished bottle, it remains one of my personal favorites. Usually found only in Tennessee, often at the distillery itself, it’s worth chasing if you see it.
Bottom line: Jack Daniel’s isn’t just famous because of its name. These bottles prove the substance is every bit as strong as the legend.
