My Musical DNA: The Unlikely Voyage Between Yacht Rock and CCM

If you took a look at my music library, you might think I’m living two very different lives. On one side, you’ve got the smooth, polished sounds of what we now call Yacht Rock. On the other, the foundational voices of ’80s and ’90s Contemporary Christian Music (CCM). At first glance, they seem like they’re from opposite worlds—but for me, they’ve always flowed from the same source.

Let’s start with Yacht Rock. I love this stuff. I’m talking Toto (my all-time favorite band), Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins—pure sonic butter. There’s something about the tight musicianship, the glossy production, and those layered harmonies that just hits me. It’s music you can chill to, but if you really listen, you realize how complex it actually is.

🎵 Rosanna – Toto is probably Toto’s most recognizable track—and it’s been dissected by music nerds as a near-perfect sonic achievement. But go deeper. Tracks like 🎵 Rockmaker – Toto, 🎵 Mama, and the often-maligned 🎵 99 from Hydra show just how ahead of their time they were.

Around the same time I was falling in love with those sounds, something deeper was happening too. I became a Christian in 1984, and the music that shaped that part of my life came from artists like Petra, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Bryan Duncan, and Wayne Watson. It was the golden era of CCM—back when it was finding its voice, packing arenas, and showing up on actual radio stations.

Petra’s More Power to Ya was in heavy rotation in my room—🎵 Judas’ Kiss and 🎵 Rose-Colored Stained Glass Windows still hit me. And Sweet Comfort Band helped kick that door wide open—especially Bryan Duncan’s soaring vocals on songs like 🎵 You Need a Reason.

And here’s the kicker: those two musical lanes? Not so different. In fact, they share more DNA than most people realize.

Some early Christian artists were absolutely sailing the same smooth waters. Roby Duke was a mostly undiscovered genius, and his debut Not the Same sits squarely in that Yacht Rock pocket—clean, groovy, and beautifully arranged. Just listen to 🎵 Not the Same – Roby Duke.

And if you’ve ever listened to 🎵 Joy Comes in the Morning – Glad, you know that’s straight-up Christian Yacht Rock from the first note to the last.

This overlap wasn’t just coincidence. The same L.A. session musicians who played with Loggins, Steely Dan, and yes, Toto, often laid down tracks for Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and others. They brought that unmistakable blend of slick production, tight harmonies, and jazz-influenced changes to both genres.

Even now, I still revisit those sounds. There are days when I pull up a classic Petra or White Heart album—Freedom remains one of CCM’s best, hands down. And I’ve got the 🎧 Yachtski Scale-certified playlist favorited on Spotify for when I just want to drift.

I’ll be honest, I don’t hear much in today’s music that captures what those artists did. A lot of modern production is too clean, too digital, too… safe. The magic that once fired our imaginations has been traded for filters and quantization. That said, there are a few modern bands keeping the flame alive—groups like 🎵 Young Gun Silver Fox, 🎵 State Cows, and 🎵 Monkey House are doing real work to keep that classic sound alive and fresh.

And if I can throw in one final soapbox moment: the powers that be may have kicked Toto to the curb for being “too commercial” or not “cutting edge” enough, and they’ll probably never see the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But come on—people still know every word to 🎵 Africa and “Rosanna,” and not just out of nostalgia. It’s because the songs were built to last. They didn’t try to reinvent the wheel—they just made the wheel sound really, really good.

So yeah, maybe it’s not trendy. Maybe it’s not “cool.” But for me, this isn’t about Christian vs. secular, or soft rock vs. stadium rock. It’s just phenomenal music that shaped who I am—both in my faith and in my love for finely crafted, deeply satisfying sound.
