… learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.

Reflect
It’s probably an understatement to say that America has a preoccupation with outward and physical appearance. You can see it in our TV shows, movies and commercials. Magazine ads are routinely airbrushed to ensure that models are flawless, and an ideal of physical perfection is often set forward, which especially confuses young people who try to achieve these impossible standards.
In the 1980s this was symbolized humorously by a routine on “Saturday Night Live.” Billy Crystal played a Latino talk show host named Fernando who repeatedly told his guests, “You look … mahvelous!” Fernando’s obsession with his guests’ outward beauty made us laugh, but it was based on a very present reality.
It’s been close to 30 years since Fernando made us smile, but we’re more focused on being “mahvelous” than ever.
- Am I too pale? I’ll make some trips to the tanning bed to fix that.
- Am I wearing the right shoes? I’d hate to wear a style that’s out of date.
- How is my hair? I have an appointment at the salon on Tuesday. It should only cost a few hundred dollars.
- I’ve noticed my nose is a little on the large size, so I’m considering seeing a plastic surgeon.
- I overheard someone say the other day that it looked like I gained some weight. I guess I need to get a personal trainer.
- My lips aren’t full enough. Bring on the Botox!
Wanting to look your best isn’t a bad thing. But being obsessed with looking “mahvelous” is. The standard for Christians isn’t about perfection on the outside, but instead about pursuing perfection for what’s on the inside. How’s your soul doing?
This morning as you get ready for work, I hope you do look mahvelous as you head to your workplace, or even if you’re just staying at home today. But make sure that you spend the time to achieve a beautiful soul through Bible study, prayer and worship.
