The Quiet Moments Are Where I’m Most Happy

I’m most happy when the noise stops.

Yesterday, when the final bell rang and everyone went home for the next 18 days, I stood in the quiet for a moment and just took it in. The halls were empty. The work was done. There was nothing else being asked of me. Those moments are peaceful, fulfilling—and earned. There’s something deeply satisfying about silence that follows responsibility.

I’m also most happy when I’m with the people I love.

Time with Daryl. With Lizzi. With Sullivan. And one day soon, with my new granddaughter. Those moments are golden. Irreplaceable. They’re not about what we’re doing as much as who we’re with. I’m keenly aware that time moves quickly, and that awareness doesn’t steal the joy—it sharpens it.

Writing is another place where happiness finds me.

The more I write, the more I want to write. Sitting here, putting thoughts into words, is relaxing in a way that’s hard to explain. It slows my mind. It helps me make sense of things. Sharing my thoughts on the page is cathartic, and it feels like a small act of honesty with myself.

And then there are the moments of simple indulgence.

A glass of great bourbon. A few hours watching a really good football game. Sitting on the balcony with some smooth jazz playing softly, taking in the music and the landscape, letting the moment linger. Those aren’t escapes—they’re pauses. Chances to savor what’s good.

I’ve come to realize that I’m happiest when I’m unhurried. When the demands have been met. When I’m present with the people I love. When I give myself permission to slow down and notice the blessings right in front of me.

Those moments may be quiet, but they’re full. And most days, that’s more than enough.
