No. 24 James Madison (12-1) at No. 5 Oregon (11-1)
Date/Time: Saturday, December 20 — 7:30 p.m. ET
TV: TNT
Site: Autzen Stadium — Eugene, Ore.
Odds snapshot: Oregon -20.5
The Big Picture
This is one of those games that needed to happen — even if the result feels inevitable.
James Madison is exactly what college football claims it wants: a dominant conference champion, 12 wins, national relevance earned on the field. Oregon is exactly what college football has become: fast, deep, powerful, and terrifying at home — especially at night.
You’re right: this is as close as we’ve come to the conference-champion-meets-the-giant vision that a 16-team playoff was supposed to deliver. And even if the matchup isn’t “fair,” it’s important. Games like this are how the so-called “lesser” conferences earn legitimacy — even when the result hurts.
James Madison Outlook
Head Coach: Bob Chesney
(Still coaching the Dukes before moving on to UCLA)
JMU’s season has been outstanding. The Dukes’ lone loss came at Louisville (28–14), and while the score wasn’t embarrassing, the gap was evident. Since then? Eleven straight wins — but none against a roster that looks anything like Oregon’s.
How JMU Stays Competitive
Run the football. Period.
- RB Wayne Knight is the engine. If he isn’t productive early, this game ends quickly.
- That means the offensive line has to punch well above its weight against Oregon’s front.
- QB Alonza Barnett III doesn’t need to be heroic — but he must be clean. No short fields. No panic throws.
Defensive Must-Haves
- DE Sahir West has to be disruptive off the edge.
- CB Justin Eaglin needs to win a few one-on-one battles just to keep Oregon honest.
If JMU can shorten the game, protect Barnett, and steal a possession or two early, the Dukes can hang around longer than expected.
Oregon Outlook
This is where the separation becomes obvious.
Offensive Firepower
- QB Dante Moore is the unquestioned leader — poised, explosive, and ruthless with mistakes.
- RBs Noah Whittington and Jordon Davison form a punishing two-headed rushing attack that will wear JMU down.
- No singular star at receiver — but the unit is deep, fast, and interchangeable.
Oregon doesn’t need big plays. They’ll happily take six yards, eight yards, six yards… and suffocate you.
Defensive Pressure
- LBs Teitum Tuioti and Matayo Uiagalelei live in opposing backfields.
- Barnett will feel pressure from the opening drive.
- No standout DB — but 11 Ducks have recorded interceptions, which tells you everything about discipline and eyes on the quarterback.
If JMU falls behind and abandons the run, Oregon’s defense turns predatory.
Game Flow
James Madison will be emotionally charged early. The stage matters. The moment matters.
For a quarter — maybe a little more — the Dukes will believe.
Then Autzen wakes up.
Then Oregon leans in.
Then the Ducks start nibbling… and nibbling… and nibbling.
By the fourth quarter, depth wins. Speed wins. Home field wins.
Prediction
Oregon 45, James Madison 17
The spread looks large — and still feels short by the end.
James Madison belongs on this field.
Oregon reminds everyone why Autzen at night is a different sport altogether.
