“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Matthew 5:5
Reflect
It may be hard to believe, but Sesame Street was popular even when I was a kid. One of the songs I remember has stayed with me in the many years since:
One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn’t belong.
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?
So, can you tell which thing doesn’t belong?
- Wealth
- Riches
- Power
- Poverty
Too easy? OK, how about this?
- Kings
- Queens
- Thrones
- Submissiveness
Picking out what doesn’t belong isn’t too hard, but in God’s universe, these things actually do belong. Just read the Sermon on the Mount and you’ll see that people who are poor inherit God’s kingdom. Of course, this isn’t the kind of poverty you see on the streets. Jesus is talking about being spiritually poor or knowing that you have nothing without the Lord. When you realize how empty you are in your spirit, you’re more open to letting God have control.
The same thing goes with being “meek,” or submissive. In our world, people who are tough and aggressive tend to get control of everything. But according to Jesus, the ones who submit to Him will inherit the earth when He returns.
Trying to make sense of things with our human understanding will always lead to wrong conclusions. But when we look at things through God’s eyes, we can see the wisdom of His ways. So if following God gets confusing sometimes, stop trying so hard to make sense of things yourself and pray to Him to show you things through His lens.
